Cacao is known as an ancient heart medicine – it allows you to get out of your head, and into your heart center. Done in a ceremony setting with experienced spiritual guidance, it opens a portal to your inner knowing, accesses your heart’s memory, and helps you heal and reveal. You can also hold your very first ceremony by yourself, but it is recommended that you have previous experience.

FLAVOUR NOTES:

Balanced, soft, with hints of grapefruit, almond, and currant.

ORIGIN:

Peru

BENEFITS:

Fantastic flavour. Easy to melt. No blender is needed. Low acidity. Good for your heart and mind.

USES:

For a ceremonial dose, use 40g of raw cacao, break it into smaller pieces and cover with boiled water directly in your cup. After 5 minutes, use a spoon to stir, then a whisk (best is a matcha whisk) to blend your cacao into a smooth paste with a natural foam crown. Top it up with more hot water and add a pinch of cayenne pepper and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Remember that the preparation of your cacao is part of your ceremony – connect with the medicine, stay present, and intentional.

What is ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao refers to high-quality, ethically sourced raw cacao that is traditionally used in sacred rituals and ceremonies. It is minimally processed, keeping the natural compounds intact, which are believed to offer spiritual and health benefits.

How can cayenne pepper enhance the effects of ceremonial cacao?

Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, which can stimulate circulation and increase endorphin levels, thus intensifying the euphoric effects associated with the consumption of ceremonial cacao. It also adds a spicy flavor note that complements the bitterness of raw cacao.

Why is water important for preparing ceremonial cacao?

Water is essential for preparing ceremonial cacao as it serves as a solvent to dissolve and integrate the raw cacao into a drinkable form. The temperature and quality of water used can affect the taste and texture of the final beverage.

What role does Piper nigrum (black pepper) play in combination with ceremonial cacao?

Piper nigrum, or black pepper, when added to ceremonial cacao can enhance absorption of certain beneficial compounds found in cacao such as curcumin from turmeric if combined together. Black pepper provides a subtle heat and complexity to the flavor profile.

Is it traditional to mix spices like cayenne pepper or Piper nigrum into ceremonial cacao beverages?

While not all traditions may include spices in their ceremonial cacao recipes, many cultures have incorporated local herbs or spices into their preparations for added flavor and synergistic health benefits. The use of spices like cayenne pepper or black pepper would depend on cultural practices and personal preference.
